2000 wild swims in UK and Europe

Inspired by Roger Deakin's Waterlog, and encouraged by him personally, Rob first published this wild swimming guidebook privately to members of the Farleigh Hungerford River Swimming Club who, back in 2000, asked Rob to run off a few copies.

Since then it has grown in size, scope and detail every year. This edition brings maturity and includes details of even more wild swims in the UK and Europe and more maps.

To add interest, illustrations of historical and nautical events have been added to many maps.

Why this is the World's most comprehensive wild swimming guidebook

It now comprises 475 A4 pages with accurate coverage that allows you to make well-informed comparisons before venturing forth to explore the enchanted swims of UK & Europe. This is not some coffee table book but rather the definitive work for the ardent wild swimmer. With over 1,000 black and white pictures and 39 colour plates it is hugely comprehensive. And contains easy-to-remember colour safety signs. The huge index makes selecting swims more precise than relying on variable reports from web contributors - Rob has personally visited over 80% of sites listed. There are quirky anecdotes and stories thoughout, to round off this record of 20 years' research by one of Britain's most committed wild swimmers.

Call it open water, outdoor or wild swimming, this book contains more information on river and lake swimming (wild swimming) sites than any other known publication. As well as chapter maps there are, where necessary, detailed maps, usually with postcodes (UK), to help you find that blissful swim.

As Chairman of the World's oldest river swimming club (Farleigh & District), Rob has assiduously sought out recommendations from members and visitors to the Club. He believes that knowing the "provenance" of a site adds to the enjoyment of swimming there. So, where appropriate, site histories and details of lost sites are also given (but not counted). Wherever possible the names that local swimmers use for a site have been used, and other local words mentioned. For instance: What exactly is a goyle? (Find out on pages 35 & 37.) As Chairman of the River & Lake Swimming Association (RALSA) Rob has appeared frequently on TV & Radio, always campaigning for the freedom to wild swim.
